ESWC 2012: Top players
Electronic Sports World Cup brought us the first World Champion in CS:GO and it was no surprise that NiP took that title. We will now take a look back and bring you an analysis of the event's top players, including in which way each NiP member excelled, which players from the other teams stood out and of course the vote for the MVP and the All-Star lineup.
Despite of being announced as just a side tournament earlier this year, ESWC's $20,000 CS:GO competition became the first major in the new game and it brought us the first World Champion.
Unsurprisingly, Ninjas in Pyjamas from Sweden and VeryGames from France ended up in the grand final, with the Swedes once again coming out victorious and taking home the $10,000 cheque. We also witnessed Area51 putting the North Americans back on the map with their 3rd place finish, while the other teams had to settle for some extra valuable LAN experience.
In total there were 50 players from 10 teams in attendance and we watched them clash on 30 maps, only a handful of which ended up being one-sided. The tight competition made it harder for individuals to stand out, but we have selected the 10 best players in this tournament and we will now analyze their contribution in detail.
Go straight to the vote!

After relinquishing his in-game leader role in NiP, Robin "Fifflaren" Johansson became the team's full-time AWPer, which proved to be a good decision as their results didn't suffer at all.
Johansson didn't particularly excel in any match at ESWC as he played more of a support role, but he still performed well above average, especially in the playoffs. With a 1.14 playoff rating, he was the 7th best of all players, while his performance in the first map of the grand final (17:8 score, 1.43 rating) was his best match in the tournament. He also left a mark in the very last round of the final when he clutched a 1-on-2 situation, bringing his team a 16-14 victory over VeryGames.
Johansson's main job was handling the big green, as 37% of his kills came with that weapon, and he was quite successful with it (46 AWP kills in total, 3rd most at the event). In addition to that, he was the hardest to kill with only 0.52 deaths per round, so the most expensive weapon was in very good hands with him.

After an impressive performance in Valencia where he barely missed out on the All-Star lineup, Edouard "SmithZz" Dobourdeaux continued being an important factor in VeryGames' success despite of not being the star of the team.
This time he was their 3rd best rated, but he once again put up a great all-round display, including repeating his 5th place in the entry kill table and 6th place among the pistol round players. His 13 rounds with three or more kills made him one of the most dominant players, while overall he had 7th most total kills as well as headshots.
The group stage was where he shined the most, having an amazing 1.42 rating (3rd best) thanks to playing well in all four matches. In particular, it was the clash with Polish superstars ESC Gaming where he played his best, ending up with a 19:4 score (1.77 rating).

Although he wasn't the main star of Area 51's third place campaign, Spencer "hiko" Martin certainly made a name for himself with his ESWC performance.
Together with his higher rated teammate Sam "DaZeD" Marine, Martin represented the best duo of the tournament, as those two were responsible for 47% of Area 51's frags. Martin's total of 191 was the event's second best, but that was largely due to the lengthy semi-final and 3rd place decider matches, which put Area 51's round number high above the rest. On average, he was one of the hardest players to kill (0.58 DPR) and he did great in pistol rounds (2nd best).
In the group stage, Martin was actually his team's best rated player and 2nd best rated among all players (1.43 group stage rating). It was his performance in the opening match of the tournament that caught the eye the most, when he posted a 22:2 score (2.48 rating) against ProGaming.TD in a 16-0 win.
Perhaps most interestingly, Martin was the event's second best T-side player on average, recording a 1.22 rating when his team was on the offense.

One of VeryGames' main stars, 18-year-old Nathan "NBK" Schmitt, confirmed once again that he will be a player to watch in CS:GO's future, as he was, just as at DreamHack Valencia, the 7th best rated player overall.
After a shaky performance at the French qualifier two days before the main event, at which Schmitt was named the MVP, VeryGames stepped their play up in the group stage to present themselves as a serious contender for gold. Schmitt continued with his play from the qualifier, as he racked up 20 or more kills in each of the four opening matches (1.61 group stage rating), also recording one of the tournament's best match-ratings of 2.39 against ESC Gaming.
Overall he was one of the best aimers at ESWC with 90 total headshots, which was an excellent 52% of all his kills, and he was one of the most dominant players with 13 rounds with three or more kills. Additionally, VeryGames were the most successful pistol round team among the four playoff participants (won 11 of 18 in total) and Schmitt was their best player in them (17:10 score).
Finally, it's interesting to note his particularly impressive play on de_nuke_ve, as he amounted to a 74:26 score on it throughout the tournament (27:5 vs ESC, 23:12 vs fm.TOXiC and 24:9 vs Area 51), and three of his four clutch round wins also took place on that map.

One of the MVP candidates and the best aimer from DH Valencia, Richard "Xizt" Landström, changed his role and became NiP's in-game leader in the aftermath of the Spanish tournament. But as we are used to from his fnatic days, it didn't affect his individual play much, if at all, as he once again put up big numbers during the Swedes' road to another title.
Despite of not being the star in any match, Landström was a beacon of consistency, playing well on every map from start to end. His best match individually was the semi-final against n!faculty where he put up a 44:19 score in two maps (1.52 rating). Although his aim wasn't as sharp as in the last tournament, he was still one of the best fraggers in Paris with the 5th best KPR of 0.83 and 2nd most rounds with at least one kill (54%).
And after these couple of tournaments, Landström established himself as one of the best riflers in the world, especially with the M4A4 as he topped the charts with it once again, same as in Valencia.

Just like in DreamHack Valencia, VeryGames' best player on home turf in Paris was their 17-year-old star Kenny "kennyS" Schrub. They young Frenchman was once again impressive with the AWP and he led his team in the overall fragging department too.
Although he wasn't the best AWPer of the tournament this time, his 73 total AWP kills, or 0.32 per round, were still excellent numbers and they have certainly kept him on top of the list of the best CS:GO AWPers so far. Schrub was one of the most consistent performers at ESWC, having a rating above 1.00 in 7 of 9 maps and playing well in both the group stage and the playoffs.
He was top rated in 3 maps, while his best display came in the tough semi-final clash with Area 51, where he put up a man-of-the-match performance having a +28 kill-death difference (68:40 score, 1.38 rating), high above all others.
In the entire tournament he had the 4th best K-D difference of +52, but more importantly he did particularly well in first duels. With a 29:8 entry score, he had the best entry K-D of +21 and by far the highest success rate winning 78% of entry duels.

The best entry killer from DreamHack Valencia, Adam "friberg" Friberg, continued proving himself among the superstars in NiP, this time by taking the title of the best aimer of ESWC.
Even though he once more had the most entry kills in his team, he wasn't as successful in that role as before due to also accumulating a lot of first deaths (30:22). However, that still made him one of the best entry killers at the event as he had the 2nd most on average (0.15).
Aside from that, he excelled in many other regards, starting with the impressive headshot count of 91, which was 56% of all his kills, making him the best headshooter at the event. His 0.85 kills per round were the third best, same as his 14 rounds with three or more kills, making him a very useful dominant fragger.
After the first match against LowLandLions where he played just around average, Friberg picked his form up and played great all the way to the final, where his performance peaked and he ended up top rated of the most important match in the tournament (47:29 score, 1.42 rating).
Overall he was top rated on 3 of his 8 maps, more often than any other player and he was the shared second best rated in the playoffs (1.35 rating). Additionally, he was the best rifler of the tournament, which is somewhat of a surprise considering what kind of star-power he has by his side in NiP.

After getting the MVP title for his DreamHack Valencia display, the most impressive player in CS:GO so far, Patrik "f0rest" Lindberg, put in another top notch performance in France. If it wasn't for his slight dip in form in the last map of ESWC, he probably would have ended up the best rated player of this tournament as well.
Still, having a rating above 1.10 in his first 7 of 8 maps and being one of the best in his team in 6 of those made him one of the most consistent players in Paris. With an impressive display against n!faculty in the semi-final (45:18 score, 1.61 rating) and a great first map against VeryGames (19:6, 1.61 rating), Lindberg was one the best players in the playoffs (1.35 rating, shared 2nd best).
Overall in the tournament he achieved the 3rd best kill-death difference of +61 and he was the second most dominant player with 15 rounds with three or more kills, which certainly made him a key factor in NiP's title winning campaign.
As usual, he was also a force to be reckoned with at the beginning of a round, winning an impressive 69% of his entry duels.

It has been around two years since we've last seen a North American team finish in top three of a bigger international tournament, and even more at one of this magnitude. With Area 51's rise to new heights in CS:GO we were also able to witness the rise of their star player at this tournament, Sam "DaZeD" Marine, which was certainly the biggest revelation for the international community.
Marine was statistically the most impressive player in over ten categories, and that wasn't the case just due to his team's high number of rounds played. Aside from collecting by far the highest amount of kills (222) and headshots (95), he was also the best fragger on average (0.88 kills per round).
Additionally, he was the most consistent performer of the tournament, having a rating above 1.00 in 9 of his 10 maps, and more importantly playing above team average on 8 of 10 occasions. One of those matches particularly stood out, when in the first map of the 3rd place decider against n!faculty he recorded the event's best match rating of 2.51 (28:8 score).
As previously mentioned, he was part of the best duo at the tournament, but even with that being the case, he was still the player who carried his team the most, as his rating was 24% higher than Area 51's average. Another way he stood out was being the most dominant player of ESWC, regularly bringing round wins to his team with multiple frags (18x 3-kill round, 4x 4-kill round).
Finally, he was the best in pistol rounds, and more importantly, he was the best entry killer of the tournament with an astonishing 50 first frags in total (19 more than the next closest player).

ESWC seems to be a tournament that Christopher "GeT_RiGhT" Alesund especially enjoys, as he was once again the winning team's best rated player, same as last year when he won it with SK Gaming in CS 1.6.
With an incredibly stable display having a rating above 1.00 in every match, Alesund even had a +9 or more K-D difference in 6 of his 8 maps, ending up with the event's best K-D of +66. Perhaps his best performance came in the very last map of the tournament, as he recorded a 27:17 score (1.45 rating) in a tight 16-14 win over VeryGames, which prompted 60% of the fans on our website to vote for him as the man-of-the-match in the grand final.
That map was right on par with the rest of his playoff displays, as he was overall the best rated player in the knockout stage with a 1.43 playoff rating. With a 0.87 KPR he was a very close second in the race for the best fragger of the tournament, while his 57% of rounds with at least one kill were unmatched by anyone. He was also one of the best aimers, with second best 0.44 HSPR and a great 51% headshot percentage.
He was very dominant too (13x 3+ kills), was one of the hardest to kill (0.53 DPR) and was NiP's best player in pistol rounds. Naturally, his rifling was near the top as always, and maybe a little surprisingly he was by far the best rated player on the Terrorist side, which has certainly proven to be the harder one in CS:GO so far.
Note: This ranking is based on Rating (read about it here). It doesn't necessarily represent an ordered list of the best players at the event, but instead singles out the ones who played well in their matches using the formula described in the page linked above.
Honorable mention

Despite of having multiple match points against VeryGames, Anexis had to settle for a draw in that match, and later they got knocked out of the tournament by n!faculty, resulting in an overall unsatisfying campaign.
Coming into the tournament, their highest rated player from recent online matches was Mathias "MSL" Lauridsen, and his play at ESWC cemented him in that spot as he continued in the same manner. While playing well in all 4 maps, Lauridsen particularly excelled in that draw with VeryGames, where he was by far his team's best rated player (25:16 score, 1.35 rating, 47% above average).

The Golden Five from Poland had their international CS:GO debut at ESWC, and after a great start with two wins, they followed it up with two losses and didn't make it out of the group stage. Their best player turned out to be last year's #6 on our Top 20 players of 2011, Wiktor "TaZ" Wojtas, who performed admirably in all 4 maps at this event.
In addition to great scores in their two wins and the loss to n!faculty, Wojtas also left his mark in their horrible 2-16 loss against VeryGames, where he recorded one of the best highlight rounds of the tournament (video). He had another highlight round earlier against fm.TOXiC (video), which helped make him one of the most dominant players.
He was also the player to carry his team the most when all participants are considered, with rating 27% above team's average.

MVP and All-Star lineup vote
Just like at DreamHack Valencia, the champions NiP were so dominant that three of their players made huge impact on their first place campaign, starting with the highest rated player of the event, Christopher "GeT_RiGhT" Alesund, and then the always influential Patrik "f0rest" Lindberg to a new star in the team, Adam "friberg" Friberg, the best aimer of ESWC and the best rated player of the final.
Kenny "kennyS" Schrub was once again the obvious star of VeryGames, so he receives another MVP nomination, while the revelation of the tournament and statistically the most impressive player, Sam "DaZeD" Marine from 3rd placed Area 51 also deserves to be nominated for his heroics.
